Departement SeminarWomen’s and men’s support for gender equality policies in organizations: From belief in gender discrimination to perceived organizational hypocrisy
Joseph Mumbanza (CeSCuP; CEBRIG, ULB)
In this research, we tested whether belief in gender discrimination explains employees’ attitudes toward gender equality policies differently for men and women. We hypothesized that belief in gender discrimination predicts men’s attitudes toward gender equality policies but reduces women’s support for those policies due to perceived organizational hypocrisy. Two studies were conducted: an online survey of employees from various organizations (USA, N=420), followed by a survey of employees from a single academic organization (Belgium, N=669). The results indicated a double path for gender equality support, differing for men and women: the more men believed in gender discrimination, the more they supported gender equality policies. In contrast, the more women believed in gender discrimination, the more hypocritical they perceived the organization to be, which lowered their support for gender equality policies. These findings highlight the importance of forging men’s allyship while maintaining women’s support by demonstrating progress in gender equality.
