Departement SeminarClimate strikers united? How climate activists see themselves and their leaders
Dr. Yasemin Gülsüm Acar (University of St Andrews)
Climate change protesters have gained an increased platform with student climate strikes, groups like Extinction Rebellion, and through young people such as Greta Thunberg, Leah Namugerwa, Freya Brown, and Jamie Margolin. Greta Thunberg has especially caught the attention of the media and world leaders as an outspoken teenager who speaks her mind about the state of the climate crisis. Previous research has shown that identification is a key antecedent not only of individuals’ commitment to collective action but also of specific beliefs about the issue of climate change. To this end, we wonder to what extent climate change protesters view the climate change movement as a singular group or event, as well as how they view Greta as a potential leader of that movement. In order to assess these questions, we have adapted identity leadership items from Steffens et al. (2014) as open-ended questions to assess perceptions of 1) the values and typical members of the climate change movement, 2) Greta Thunberg’s prototypicality as a member and a leader (identity prototypicality), 2) whether they perceive her as working for this group (identity advancement), 3) whether she has the ability to make the group feel cohesive (identity entrepreneurship), and 4) whether she engages in action that makes the group more effective (identity impresarioship). Data was collected online in the UK (N=110), Sweden (N=51), and Turkey (N=59). Preliminary results and implications will be discussed.
