Anatomy of a Conspiracy Theory

Dr. Stipe Odak (UCL)

The presentation analyzes Kangura, a publication instrumental in fomenting the 1994 genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda. It focuses specifically on the journal’s conspiracy theories regarding Tutsis. The analysis demonstrates that Kangura’s representation of Tutsis as the enemy combines strategies of both dehumanization and aggrandizement. Furthermore, it illustrates how these conspiracy theories gain persuasiveness by evoking tragic history and situating themselves within preceding conspiracy theories, especially antisemitic ones.
